Pre-packaged Pyro: 101

Pre-packaged pyro is the most professional, easiest, most consistent, and SAFEST methods to create the effects you are looking for. The following is a brief breakdown on the required controllers and hardware for such effects.

To safely use these effects, three parts are involved:

1. The Controller

There are several controller options listed below. These controllers are also available in a 3-pin XLR version, Bare Wire, or both.

CPH2213-b.jpgBasic Controller Options:

CPH2214 1 CH Pyro Controller (Bare Wire)

The 1 channel mini controller is a useful device when needing to fire Pyro from a small place or where size and being discreet are important. This simple controller has all the much needed safety elements: key switch lock out, fire button, and continuity tester. A battery power supply is required and wires are provided to connect the external power supply. The external power offers you flexibility for your set up. The battery commonly used is a 9-volt. A larger battery (ex. 6-volt lantern battery) would be required for long wire runs. You must calculate the battery output to ensure the correct battery is selected.

CPH2213 4 Channel Mini Pyro Controller (Bare Wire)

The 4 channel Mini Controller is a useful device when needing to fire Pyro from small places or where size and being discreet are important. We included 4 channels in this controller so multiple devices could be fired from 1 small controller. This simple controller has all the all the needed safety elements: key switch lock out, fire button, continuity tester, and channel selector. A battery power supply is required and wires are provided to connect the external power supply. The external power offers you with flexibility for your set up. The battery commonly used is a 9-volt. As with the 1-CH version, you must calculate the battery output to ensure the correct battery is selected.

pyro-clip3.jpgWith either of the above controller options, you will also need CPH1109 Pyro Clips (two are required per effect location) and Zip Wire (the trade name for standard Lamp Cord Wire - available from your local hardware store) to interface this control set up with the cartridges.

Industrial Controller Options:

Le Maitre 2-Way Pyro Controller - $300.00
Le Maitre 6-Way Pyro Controller - $400.00

The 2-Way and 6-Way Pyro Controllers are battery operated cap discharge controllers suitable for use with both Pyroflash and Prostage II effects (ie. XLR or Bare-wire hookups)

Each of the channels can be fired individually with 165 feet of cable and up to 8 effects wired in series on each.

Please Note: A professional Pyro Controller must be used for pre-packaged pyro. Using “home-made” controllers or controlling via a Light Board or DMX controller is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and against the law in most (if not all) states. An NFPA1126 compliant Key-locked dedicated pyro controller like the ones listed above are the ONLY way to legally (and safely) control such effects.

CPH1230.jpg2. Hardware

The proper holders are required to safely secure the pyro effects to your stage and/or set pieces. These can be very simple single-effect holders or more complex “multi-use” or Multi-Shot pieces. The type of pyro you're using will determine the correct hardware needed to safely use the effects. While our web page is loaded with information on this subject, feel welcome to contact us for questions on what hardware is recommended and/or required for your effects.

3. Pyro Refills

Pre-packaged pyro is "ready to use" with no mixing/measuring required, thus making this style of pyro much more consistent from shot-to-shot and MUCH safer than any other means. These are disposable units, which are used once then discarded after each performance.
